I am Kayla Ashley Melton from Destin, Florida. I am currently planning to get a major in chemistry with a minor in business management. I have done many extracurricular activities over the years varying from marching band to the Science National Honors Society, but the one that I am definitely planning to continue doing at Agnes Scott is playing softball. Hopefully I will be able to still continue doing other extracurricular activities that I enjoyed before and maybe even explore new interests and passions while I am at it.

Although I have many school related activities, I also have many other hobbies in my personal life. One hobby I really enjoy is learning about other cultures around the world, but the one that I take the most interest in is Japan. My father is half Japanese and half Caucasian and my mother is Vietnamese, but despite living in a culturally diverse household, I live an extremely Americanized lifestyle. Although my family is run slightly different from most of my friends, I noticed there was a large difference between my cousin and I. Since there is no family that live close by, we only use English in my house, but at my cousin’s house they speak Vietnamese. We celebrate Thanksgiving completely different!

Originally, I was only interest about my Asian heritage, but after my trip to Iceland I became interested in European culture. At the time I knew very little about Iceland, but I loved how rich the culture is and made me interested in learning even more about other countries. In the future I wish to travel to other countries and learn more about their heritage.
